After the New York Jets got off to a 5-2 start in 2022, Robert Saleh was in the thick of the Coach of the Year discussion while basking in the aftermath of his infamous “receipts” comment to the New York media.
A 2-8 finish to the year turned those receipts straight onto him, particularly his juice comment that the Jets would face the Bills again after a 20-12 Week 14 defeat. Instead, Saleh went swimming in January and finished out the season by failing to take his friend Mike McDaniel with him.
Saleh’s seat may be feeling a bit warm after owner Woody Johnson emphatically did not place a playoff mandate for the Jets’ 2023 season—so emphatically that he insisted on Aaron Rodgers at the quarterback position.
Will 2023 be the year for Saleh and the Jets? Can Saleh win the Coach of the Year and take New York to the promised land?
Head out and make your picks after scooping up BetMGM’s $1,000 bonus.
All the usual suspects are in the Coach of the Year running for 2023, headed by media favorite Dan Campbell. The Jets have some receipts to take on Campbell, too, after he insisted his team was preparing for Zach Wilson all along despite the Jets’ public insistence that Mike White would play.
Campbell is at +900 to win COTY, followed by Sean Payton and Matt Eberflus at +1200, DeMeco Ryans at +1400, and Frank Reich at +1600. Saleh is down below all of these at +1800.
Seems like Saleh should be taking some more receipts, particularly on Ryans, who succeeded him as the defensive coordinator of the 49ers. New York goes up against Denver and Houston in 2023 for COTY odds showdowns.
Holding the Pen
Aaron Rodgers remains so close yet elusively out of reach. Many Packers media personalities and fans insist that Green Bay has all the leverage in a trade.
However, as Saleh is wont to say, “When you’re writing the story of your life, never allow another man to hold the pen.” Joe Douglas lives by that philosophy in trades. As ESPN’s Rob Demovsky said, leverage is in the eye of the beholder, and Douglas will not allow Brian Gutenkunst to pry away extra assets.
Jets’ ownership and fans may be impatient, but their front office will not budge in the battle of wills.
Other BetMGM picks
If COTY doesn’t get you excited, there are some other nice picks out there. For example, New York/New Jersey is currently the state (grouping) with the highest odds to win Super Bowl 58 at +450. The only grouping higher is the rest of the unnamed states at +150.
Furthermore, the AFC East has the second-highest odds to represent their conference in the Super Bowl at +375, trailing only the AFC West (+325).
You can also put money on the Jets to make the playoffs at -150, and with a quarterback initialed AR coming, you’d best jump on that today!
