UK PM Rishi Sunak calls general election for July 4

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday (May 22) announced that the general election will be held on July 4 and that the King has granted the dissolution of parliament. 

Earlier, Sunak had said that the general elections in the United Kingdom will be held in the second half of 2024. 

Multiple British media outlets including BBC and the Guardian have reported that the UK PM is set to call a summer general election which will most likely take place on July 4. 

A report by the Guardian citing senior sources said that the upcoming elections will see Labour’s Keir Starmer attempting to take power for his party after 14 years of Conservative-led government.
